Petition: Stop the Encroachment on O’odham Lands

For centuries, O’odham people has called the lands surrounding the area now intersected by the US-Mexico border home. These communities have lived in harmony with the desert landscape, evolving traditions and a culture deeply connected to this very land. However, the looming threat of further wall construction is disastrously encroaching on the sovereignty and the very essence of our people’s way of life.

Currently, the US government pursues policies that dismiss Indigenous rights and further endangers the natural environment integral to the Tohono O’odham. In particular, the “Roosevelt Reservation” serves as an outdated and unjust territorial claim that disrupts the lives of the O’odham people and harms delicate ecosystems.

On August 25, 2006, a vivid violation of our tribal sovereignty occurred as more than 20 armed and masked federal CBP agents, SWAT teams, and BIA officers invaded the Tohono O’odham Nation, blatantly disregarding tribal law. This alarming incident not only violated tribal sovereignty but engraved deep wounds in the collective memory and trust of our people.

We call upon Congress and the federal government to take immediate, decisive steps to halt further construction of the border wall on O’odham lands, ensuring respect for indigenous rights and environmental sanctity. We demand the revocation of the “Roosevelt Reservation” in order to safeguard the autonomy of Native lands.

Additionally, we urgently request a comprehensive investigation into the August 25, 2006 incident. Those responsible must be held accountable, and the systemic issues allowing such actions must be dismantled to prevent recurring injustice.

The time to act is now. By signing this petition, you support the preservation of Indigenous sovereignty, environmental integrity, and the moral obligation to honor the rights and dignity of the Tohono O’odham people. Stand with us as we seek justice and convey a powerful message to American lawmakers that their actions should align with respect and fairness for all communities. Sign the petition today to stop the encroachment on O’odham land and protect our shared future.
